Jak of all trades? Not of leukaemia therapy!

Monday, January 30, 2012

About one in five or six cases of adult leukaemia in Western populations relates to so-called chronic myeloid leukaemia, or CML. Treatment of CML usually relies on inhibitors of the abnormal protein that causes the condition but some patients do not respond to treatment and efforts are underway to develop a supplementary approach, targeting the so-called JAK2 kinase. Recent results from the groups of Veronika Sexl at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna (Vetmeduni Vienna) and Giulio Superti-Furga at the Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (CeMM) have called this strategy into question. The work is published in the current issue of the prestigious journal Nature Chemical Biology and is of immediate relevance to leukaemia treatment.

The cause of CML has been known since 1960, when two scientists in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania showed that the disease was associated with a particular genetic abnormality, the "Philadelphia chromosome". Philadelphia chromosomes represent the result of an incorrect crossing-over between two chromosomes, through which part of the Bcr ("breakpoint cluster region") gene from chromosome 22 fuses with the Abl gene on chromosome 9. The fusion gene product is a tyrosine kinase, i.e. it can phosphorylate other proteins on tyrosine residues. When it does so, it incorrectly activates several signal pathways controlling cell division in white blood cells and leads to leukaemia. Thankfully, drugs have been developed that prevent the kinase activity of the BCR-ABL fusion protein and the majority of patients treated with such tyrosine kinase inhibitors (e.g. imatinib) show no further signs of leukaemia.

Unfortunately, however, patients may develop resistance to the therapy so an alternative approach is required. Recent developments have focused on the use of drugs targeting another kinase involved in CML, the JAK2 kinase. In normal white blood cells, JAK2 is known to activate a further molecule, known as STAT5, which is absolutely required for the development of CML. The argument runs that if JAK2 could be specifically inhibited ? and thus STAT5 not activated ? it would bring fresh hope to patients who do not respond to treatment with imatinib. Several potential inhibitors of JAK2 are currently undergoing clinical trials and may shortly be available for treating patients.

The theory is appealing but to date we do not really understand exactly what happens when JAK2 is inactivated following the initiation of leukaemia by the Bcr-Abl oncogene. Sexl and her colleagues have used a transgenic mouse model to clarify the functions of these proteins in leukaemia. Their results were highly unexpected. The JAK2 kinase was found to be not required for the maintenance of the disease, i.e. inhibiting JAK2 in leukaemic cells had no therapeutic benefit. However, inhibition of STAT5 in leukaemia was sufficient to prevent cell proliferation. As Sexl says, "this means that the normal signalling pathway is completely rewired in CML cells: STAT5 activity no longer depends on JAK2." In support of this conclusion, the researchers were able to show that the BCR-ABL protein directly phosphorylates STAT5, thereby activating it.

As Superti-Furga notes, "The findings have extremely important consequences for CML therapy in humans," adding, "We are very happy that the collaboration between our two groups is so fruitful". Put bluntly, leukaemia patients that do not respond to imatinib will not be helped by inhibiting JAK2. Interestingly, some JAK2 inhibitors do slow the progression of leukaemic cells, although they must be given at very high levels. The "therapeutic" action is mediated by a secondary target of the JAK2 inhibitors, which Sexl and colleagues have shown to be the Bcr-Abl oncogene itself. Sexl concludes that, "at the moment there is simply no rationale for giving leukaemic patients JAK2 inhibitors. If we want to help patients who do not respond to imatinib, we should concentrate instead on developing inhibitors to STAT5."

HBT: Is identity fraud rampant in baseball?

In the wake of the ?Leo Nunez? and ?Fausto Carmona? identity fraud incidents, the New York Times has a story in which people around baseball talk about how widespread the problem is feared to be:

Few in baseball were surprised that two well-established players had misrepresented themselves. The fear is that the problem could be much more widespread. One agent said more than a dozen players could soon lose their contracts because of age and identity issues.

?These are like time bombs,? Mark Newman, the Yankees? senior vice president for baseball operations, said by telephone from the Dominican Republic while scouting there last week.

For his part Newman, as well as others in baseball, believe that the problem will get better. Still: as long as there are millions to be gained by an 18 or 19 year-old passing himself off as 16, this problem is going to persist.

Nick Santino, Struggling Soap Opera Actor, Commits Suicide After Euthanizing Dog

Nick Santino, a struggling soap opera actor, apparently took his own life last week after he euthanized his dog due to pressure from his condo association.

Nick, who appeared on All My Children and Guiding Light, was found dead in his New York residence just a day after he put down beloved pit bull, Rocco

"Today I betrayed mand put down my best friend," Santino, 47, wrote in a suicide note. "Rocco trusted me and I failed him. He didn't deserve this."

Nick Santino, Dog

Santino, who was raised in an orphanage and foster homes, adopted Rocco from a shelter several years ago, and wrote fondly of his dog on his Facebook page.

"I did not rescue Rocco, Rocco rescued me," he once wrote.

But in 2010, Santino began to have issues with residents in his building, after new strict dog regulations were announced, which included a ban on pit bulls.

The ban didn't affect residents who already had pit bulls in the building, many of Santino's neighbors reportedly weren't fond of Rocco, and complained.

"He felt like he was in this battle because he was the only guy in the building with a pit-bull mix," Santino's neighbor, Kevin Clearly, told the New York Post.

"He was distraught and remorseful about putting down his best friend."

It was much worse than anyone thought. After making a call to his former girlfriend at about 2 a.m. Wednesday, police found Santino's body in his bedroom.

He passed away from an apparent overdose on pills.

Old Masters auctions total more than $120 million (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Old Masters paintings brought in more than $120 million at auction sales this week, with several works selling for more than $5 million each and records set for some artists.

The top price in several days of sales at Christie's and Sotheby's was $5.9 million for Giambattista Tiepolo's "The Arrival of Henry VIII at the Villa Contarini" at Christie's, an auction record that was just under the work's high estimate.

Christie's sold $51.8 million worth of art including commission, up $21 million from its sales a year ago. But the total fell more than $15 million shy of the $67.7 million achieved at Sotheby's, which totaled more than $62 million on Thursday alone.

"The Old Masters paintings sales saw success across a wide variety of genres, including 18th century Italian views, the Dutch golden age, Flemish Baroque, as well as French Rococo," said Nicholas Hall, Christie's co-chair of Old Masters and 19th century art.

Frans Hals' "Portrait of a Gentleman, half length, in a black coat" which was sold from the collection of late Hollywood star Elizabeth Taylor fetched $2.1 million, or more than twice the pre-sale estimate at Christie's.

The work hung in Taylor's bedroom in her Bel Air home, and was the actress's only Old Masters work, the auction house said.

At Sotheby's, Canaletto's "A View of the Churches of the Redentore and San Giacomo," sold for just under $5.7 million, toward the low end of its pre-sale estimate range. The work was from the collection of Britain's Lady Forte, whose husband founded the hotel and restaurant chain Trusthouse Forte.

Fra Bartolommeo's "Saint Jerome in the Wilderness" soared to nearly $4.9 million, or more than three times the estimate, setting an artist's record.

Botticelli's "Madonna and Child with the Young Baptist" fetched $4.5 million, about four times the estimate.

Sotheby's said the sale demonstrated that works of high quality continue to bring exceptional prices such as the top 10 works on Wednesday which each sold for more than $2 million.

"In the days before the sale we saw broad geographical interest in our exhibition, which translated to bidding from Europe, North and South America, and Asia," George Wachter, co-chair of Old Master paintings and Christopher Apostle, head of Sotheby's Old Master paintings in New York, added in a statement.

The sales were marked by institutional buying.

Washington's National Gallery of Art bought Thomas de Keyser's "Portrait of a gentleman," for $1.5 million, setting an artist's record, while California's J. Paul Getty museum purchased the Italian Renaissance "Portrait of a Young Man" attributed to Piero del Pollaiuolo for $1.4 million, many times the $400,000 high estimate.

One of the oldest works on offer, the very rare "The Virgin Annunciate" by Simone Martini from the early 1300s, broke the artist's record when it sold for just over its $4 million high estimate at Sotheby's.

But several expected highlights failed to sell, including Hans Memling's "The Virgin Nursing the Christ Child," which had been estimated to sell for up to $8 million at Christie's.

(AP) ? The tougher South Course at Torrey Pines suited Kyle Stanley just fine Friday in the Farmers Insurance Open.

Stanley overcame a double bogey early in his round by running off four birdies on the front nine for a 4-under 68, giving him a one-shot lead over Brandt Snedeker going into the weekend.

Snedeker, who first gained notoriety as a rookie at Torrey Pines when he shot 61 on the North Course, had a 64 on the North to make a swift climb up the leaderboard. He is coming off hip surgery at the end of last year and made his season debut at the Humana Challenge last week by getting into the hunt. He tied for eighth, and here he is again.

"I'm certainly surprised that I played this well this fast," Snedeker said. "Normally, it takes me a while to get the rust off. But my practice at home went really, really well. I was actually chomping at the bit to get out here because I knew I was playing well.

"Hopefully, that can happen through the weekend."

Stanley, long off the tee and as polished as any of the PGA Tour rookies who won last year, was at 14-under 130.

A tournament already missing Tiger Woods will have to do without hometown star Phil Mickelson on the weekend. He shot himself out of the tournament with a 77 on the South in the opening round, and didn't make nearly enough birdies on the North to make the cut. Mickelson had to settle for a 68, missing the cut for the first time in 10 years at Torrey Pines.

"We're going to have perfect weather out here at Torrey, and I'd love to be playing," Mickelson said.

Sang-Moon Bae, a PGA Tour rookie who is No. 34 in the world, had a 67 to match the best score on the South for the second round. That put him two shots behind at 12-under 132, along with Martin Flores, who also had a 67 on the South.

Hunter Mahan shot 65 on the North, while FedEx Cup champion Bill Haas had a 71 on the South. They were three shots behind.

The cut came at 2-under 142, and there will be another cut Saturday because more than 78 players are still around. That group includes Geoff Ogilvy, who birdied his last hole on the North for a 70, and Ernie Els, who was at 3-under 141.

Stanley goes about his work quietly. He prefers boring golf of fairways and greens, though there was a little too much excitement when his 7-iron from the rough jumped on his and went over the green, down the slope and into the hazard. He chipped to 5 feet and missed the putt, taking double bogey, effectively wiping out the two birdies he had made.

He followed that with a bogey from the bunker on the par-3 16th.

"I got off to a good start, and it was tough to take," Stanley said. "But you've just got to be patient out here."

That he was. He had birdie putts on the last 11 holes he played and birdied all the par 5s. As a testament to his length, he hit his tee shot 346 yards on the par-5 ninth, and hit 2-iron from 270 yards.

"Not a very good one," he said, though it left him an up-and-down from the bunker for one last birdie.

The South played three shots more difficult in the warm sunshine along the Pacific, but at least everyone knows where they stand going into the last two rounds.

Stanley likes his chances, for no other reason than the South is long, and he is hitting his drives where he's aiming at the moment.

A native of the Seattle area who went to school at Clemson, Stanley was on the verge of joining the cast of rookie winners last year when he had a one-shot lead playing the last hole at the John Deere Classic. He made bogey from the bunker, and in the final group behind him, Steve Stricker made an improbable birdie for a one-shot win.

"I wasn't very discouraged," Stanley said. "I think I made more money that week than I had thus far, so it was good. It was nice to really get in contention with a few holes left. That's kind of the goal for this year, to just keep working hard and keep trying to get myself back there."

Snedeker knows the feeling. He played in the final group as a rookie at Torrey Pines, but couldn't keep Woods from another win on this public course along the Pacific. Even so, third place was enough to send Snedeker to keeping his card, the immediate goal of most rookies.

Now, he's looking for yet another win.

"I'm driving the ball as good as I've ever driven it in my career, which isn't saying a lot, but it's saying enough for me right now," Snedeker said. "I'm still putting the ball really, really well. So I'm excited with where I am after the first two days. I feel like as good as I've played, I've left a few out there, which is a good feeling to know my game is where it needs to be."

DIVOTS: Ryo Ishikawa ran off three birdies over his last five holes for a 69 on the North to finish at 6 under. The Japanese star was coming off a missed cut at the Sony Open ... Chris Riley, playing on a sponsor's exemption, was at 7 under. ... Hunter Mahan heads to Qatar next week. His wife, Kandi, will be joining him, then will go to Uganda for mission work geared toward helping children in a tiny village with nutrition and education. ... Vijay Singh holed out with a wedge for eagle on the par-5 18th on the South Course. A San Diego newspaper reporter wanted an interview on the shot, and Singh turned and said, "It was a wedge and it went in. What more do you need?"

Simon Cowell to launch DJ talent show (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? TV personality and music producer Simon Cowell is launching a new talent competition to find the world's best DJs.

Already known to television audiences in Britain and the United States as the acerbic judge on hit talent shows like "American Idol", "The X Factor" and "Britain's Got Talent", the 52-year-old is looking to expand his empire.

"DJ's are the new rock stars, it feels like the right time to make this show," he said in a statement.

The new format will be co-produced by SYCO, Cowell's joint venture with Sony Music, and Overbrook Entertainment, a U.S. entertainment company founded by Hollywood star Will Smith.

Sony Pictures Television will also be a partner in the venture, which has been in development for more than a year. Smith's wife Jada Pinkett Smith has been involved for Overbrook.

The three parties said they would announce their broadcast partners in Britain and the United States soon.

New Zealand whale stranding kills 36, threatens 40 (AP)

WELLINGTON, New Zealand ? A mass-stranding of whales on a New Zealand beach has left 36 of the creatures dead and threatens 40 more.

Department of Conservation area manager John Mason said 99 pilot whales stranded themselves Monday on Farewell Spit on the South Island. By Tuesday, 36 whales had died and another 40 remained stranded and were still in danger.

Mason said conservation staff and volunteers had successfully refloated 17 whales, which had swum out to deeper water. Another six whales remained unaccounted for.

The 40 beached whales were briefly swimming in shallow water early Tuesday afternoon but became stranded again by the evening as the tide went out. Mason said volunteers would try to keep the whales cool and wet until dark. He said after that, all they could hope for was that the whales would swim away on the next high tide during the night.

Pilot whales grow to about 20 feet (6 meters) and regularly strand themselves in large numbers during the New Zealand summer months.

Experts describe Farewell Spit as a whale trap due to the way its shallow waters seem to confuse whales and diminish their ability to navigate.

But he is serious about his campaign.

Roemer won less than 1 percent of the Iowa caucus votes, and the ones he got came from only seven of the state's 99 counties. He won 950 of the 249,655 New Hampshire votes.

So here are the basics about Buddy Roemer, according to his campaign website, Facebook page, and Project VoteSmart.

Romney stance on Dream Act is magnified in Florida (AP)

MIAMI ? Mitt Romney's promise to veto a measure that would create a path to citizenship for some illegal immigrants threatens to turn off some Hispanic voters, whose support could be critical in a general election match-up against President Barack Obama.

The issue is gaining prominence as the GOP front-runner heads toward the Jan. 31 primary in Florida, even though most of the state's Hispanics are Puerto Rican or Cuban-American and, thus, aren't affected by U.S. immigration law, nor view it as a priority. Still, it's a state where 13 percent of registered voters are Hispanic, where the nation's largest Spanish-language TV networks are based, and where the nation's third-largest number of illegal immigrants live ? intensifying the focus on Romney's position.

"Latino voters, like all voters in this country, are interested in America being an opportunity nation," Romney said Monday night during a debate in South Carolina, when asked if his promise to veto the so-called Dream Act was alienating voters. "In my view, as long as we communicate to the people of all backgrounds in this country that it can be better, and that America is a land of opportunity, we will get those votes."

Maybe not.

His veto promise ? first made in the days before the Iowa caucuses ? has hit a nerve with prominent Hispanics, and some Republicans worry that the position will turn off the growing number of Latino voters in swing-voting states, particularly in the west, who are now on the fence after backing Obama in 2008. These Republicans suggest that Romney was trying to curry favor with hardline Republican primary voters at the expense of Hispanics whose support he would need come the fall.

"If Romney's the nominee, he's going to have to come to the center and make some decisions about how to resolve that issue," said Republican Herman Echevarria, a Cuban-American who is the CEO of a Miami-based bilingual advertising agency and a longtime local political player. "He's trying to be a conservative candidate. And if you don't become a conservative candidate, you cannot be the candidate of the Republicans. But you cannot be elected president just as a conservative candidate."

Already, there are signs of backlash.

For Colombia native Ana Rodriguez, a Miami-based graphic designer who received political asylum and will become a U.S. citizen this year, Romney's comments are precisely what motivated her to vote ? against him. "Because of what I went through," Rodriguez said, "I want more people (elected) who are interested in supporting immigrants and want a more equal and fair system of immigration."

Florida Dream Act activists, who have been among the most visible in the nation, also are promising to keep the heat on Romney as his campaign comes to the state.

And last week, at El Tropical restaurant in Miami, Florida Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, who has endorsed Romney, told a group of mostly Cuban-American GOP primary voters that the former Massachusetts governor was the only candidate who could fix the economy and protect U.S. security interests. Then, a young Colombian immigrant stepped forward and asked Diaz-Balart, who has championed immigrants' rights including the Dream Act, how the congressman could support Romney.

"You have been such a friend to us, I just don't understand," said Juan Rodriguez, a student at Florida International University who was among a half-dozen students who walked from Miami to Washington in the winter to raise awareness of the legislation.

The exchange was caught on tape by several Spanish-language media outlets that reach viewers around the world.

Romney has arguably the toughest immigration position of any of the Republican candidates. Newt Gingrich would give legal status to illegal immigrants who have deep roots in the U.S. and lived otherwise lawfully.

Conversely, Romney has been adamantly opposed to any type of amnesty for illegal immigrants since his first White House run in 2008. Previously, he called reasonable a bipartisan proposal to allow immigrants to seek green cards in exchange for certain penalties, though he says he never officially supported such legislation.

Last year, Romney objected to the Dream Act. But he went further in the days before the Iowa caucuses when asked if he would veto the measure.

"The answer is yes," Romney told voters then.

While he said he does not oppose creating a path for those who serve in the U.S. military to become permanent residents, he also said he doesn't believe such individuals should be able to adjust their status by attending school, nor should they receive in-state tuition.

Since narrowly winning the Iowa caucuses, Romney has been sending Hispanics mixed messages.

He's working to woo Hispanics and convince them he's sincere in fighting their causes, recently launching TV commercials in Florida featuring Cuban-Americans Diaz-Balart and fellow U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, as well as his son Craig speaking in Spanish.

But, in South Carolina, he's also been campaigning with Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, the leading architect behind the tough Arizona-style immigration laws. Even many Latinos who support tougher immigration laws worry such measures will lead to racial profiling because they give broad leeway to law enforcement to stop anyone whom they suspect of being in the country illegally.

"This is all about his primary right now," said Benjamin Bishin, a University of California, Riverside political science professor who has long studied Cuban-American and other Latino political attitudes.

Jennifer Korn of the center-right group the Hispanic Leadership Network, which is co-hosting a GOP primary debate and Latino conference this month in Florida, said Romney took a risk in alienating Hispanic voters. But, she added, he's also made clear he wants to fix the broader immigration system.

"If he explains it correctly, he definitely has a chance to have the Hispanic community listen to what he has to say," she said.

He seemed to try to do just that during recent debates, saying: "I love legal immigration," but that "to protect our legal immigration system we have got to protect our borders and stop the flood of illegal immigration."

That appeared to be enough for Peter Gonzalez, a Cuban-American commercial attorney and fiscally conservative Democrat.

"It's nice to hear a guy who the media has said is taking a harsh turn to the right on immigration say they love legal immigration," he said.

Blast in southeast Turkey kills 1, wounds 27 (AP)

ANKARA, Turkey ? An explosion apparently targeting a police car killed one civilian and wounded 27 people, including seven police officers, in a mostly Kurdish city of Turkey on Thursday, an official said.

The private Dogan news agency said police had to use tear gas to disperse an angry crowd that gathered at the scene of the blast in the city of Hakkari.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the explosion, but Kurdish rebels who are fighting for autonomy in the region have used roadside bombings against military and police vehicles there in the past.

Gov. Muammer Turker told Turkey's state-run Anadolu Agency that the explosion occurred on a busy street in the southeastern city as the police vehicle was driving by.

The blast wounded a total of 28 people, including seven policemen, and one of the civilians died at the hospital, Turker said.

TRT, Turkey's state-run television, said the explosion was caused by a roadside bomb targeting police. The pro-Kurdish news agency, Firat, said the explosion was caused by a bomb that formed a large crater on the ground and shattered the surrounding buildings' windows.

Kurdish rebels, who belong to the Kurdistan Workers' Party, have been branded as terrorists by the U.S. and the European Union. Tens of thousands of people have died during their battle for independence since 1984.

Talk of the Town - Whitley County: 'Midwest Automotive Loop ...

By Krystall Shull

Members of the Senate Committee on Commerce and Economic Development voted unanimously last week in favor of a resolution authored by senators Jim Banks, Jim Buck and Travis Holdman for the legislature to study the benefits of creating an industrial zone within the Midwest Automotive Loop.
?I commend Mayor Greg Goodnight and Mayor Wayne Seybold for their innovative idea and work in creating the Midwest Auto Loop,? Buck said. ?It?s my hope this study committee will help identify incentives that will bring about a great economic boom to our communities.?
Senate Resolution 3 urges the Legislative Council to assign an interim study committee to examine the possibility of creating an industrial zone within the Midwest Automotive Loop and to also look at possible tax credits and regulatory relief programs to entice new industries to the zone.
?With Indiana?s fiscal stability, we are in a great position to step-up investment opportunities,? Holdman said. ?The Midwest Automotive Loop will give us a new competitive edge, enabling these tried-and-true industrial communities to help each other.?
The Midwest Automotive Loop was established this past summer by Kokomo Mayor Greg Goodnight and Marion May Wayne Seybold. The loop, which includes Kokomo, Marion and surrounding areas, was created this past summer to capitalize on the area?s strengths to attract additional manufacturing technology investments to the region.
?The creation of the Midwest Automotive Loop highlights the region?s strengths and provides a huge economic tool to attract new jobs for our highly-trained Hoosier workforce,? Banks said. ?I am committed to working with my fellow lawmakers, to build on the success this region has enjoyed in the past and provide additional resources for our communities.?
SR 3 now heads to the full Senate for further action. Hoosiers can get a full, updated copy of the resolution online by clicking here.

Republicans point toward 1st of 2 SC debates (AP)

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. ? The Republican presidential contenders on Monday campaigned their way into the first of two debates before a pivotal weekend primary in South Carolina, with Mitt Romney savoring an endorsement from the latest campaign dropout and his pursuers struggling to emerge as the race's principal conservative.

Hours before the debate, former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman withdrew from the race and announced his support for Romney despite their differences. He appealed to all remaining contenders to stop attacking one another.

There appeared little likelihood of that happening, either in the TV commercials, mail and other advertising blanketing the state ahead of Saturday's vote or, possibly, on the debate stage itself.

Romney wasn't present for Huntsman's endorsement, and Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum, Rick Perry and Ron Paul all but ignored it as they sought to slow the front-runner's momentum in the race to pick a Republican rival to President Barack Obama this fall.

Romney has victories in the only two contests of the campaign thus far, the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary earlier this month. Gingrich has conceded that the former Massachusetts governor will likely be the party's nominee if he is similarly victorious in South Carolina, an assertion that none of the others in the race has so far contested.

That raised the significance of the night's debate, as well as another one scheduled for Thursday in Charleston.

Romney is the leader in the public opinion polls in South Carolina, although his rivals hope the state's high, 9.9 percent unemployment rate and the presence of large numbers of socially conservative evangelical voters will allow one of them to slip by him.

Huntsman was the second campaign dropout to endorse Romney, after former Minnesota Gov. Tom Pawlenty. Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, who quit after a last-place finish in Iowa, has not yet said which of the remaining contenders she supports. Herman Cain, who left the race in December after facing allegations of sexual impropriety, has promised an endorsement soon.

Huntsman's parting announcement included a reference to the differences he and Romney had. But he left the podium without responding to questions about his remark last week, in the run-up to the New Hampshire primary, that Romney was unelectable and out of touch.

It was unclear why Romney did not attend the announcement. He was in town for a later campaign appearance and then the debate.

Gingrich and Perry both began their day at a Martin Luther King Jr. Day observance, where they praised the legacy of the slain civil right legacy.

At about the same time, Santorum was complaining that attacks launched against him by a political action committee supporting Romney was spreading lies. He called on Romney to ask the group to edit or remove its ads from the air.

The attack on Santorum is patterned after one that helped send Gingrich into a nosedive in the polls in the final weeks of the Iowa caucus campaign.

Gingrich made similar demands on Romney to rein in his supporters, but was ignored.

Paul, who generally keeps a light campaign schedule, addressed the Faith and Freedom Coalition forum in the afternoon. The Texas congressman cast his libertarian message in religious terms, noting the Bible speaks up for private property ownership and sound currency.

Sean Preston Federline Shakes His Groove Thing

Britney Spears is loving life at home these days.

Just days after posting some adorable kid photos on Facebook and Twitter, the singer uploaded a video of her eldest son showcasing his dance skills.

Check out six-year-old Sean Preston Federline getting DOWN to the oldie "Shake Your Groove Thing" by Peaches & Herb through a video game ...

It would be cute to see the little fella bust a move no matter how good he was, but the youngster does appear to have some talent, doesn't he?

He's certainly got the focus. When younger brother Jayden James, 5, got anywhere near Preston's dance zone, he was promptly chastised.

Kids. Keep the video and pics coming, Britney!

Philly PD: 1 arrested in Winter Classic fan fight

(AP) ? Philadelphia police have arrested a man in the brawl between Flyers and Rangers fans following the Winter Classic game on Jan. 2.

A police spokeswoman says a man was taken into custody Thursday.

Police say an off-duty Woodbridge Township, N.J., police officer and Iraq veteran was left with injuries that required stitches.

In an edited version of a YouTube video of the altercation released by Philadelphia police, a man in a Flyers jersey throws the first punch after a verbal confrontation. The video ends with a Rangers fan lying stunned in the street outside a popular South Philadelphia cheesesteak shop.

Authorities did not immediately release the suspect's name. Police had been trying to track down three men involved in the altercation.
