RUGBY Q&A: PHAIDRA KNIGHT INTERVIEWS EAGLE KATIE ...

Phaidra

CLICK

A perennial Team USA Eagle, Phaidra Knight is one of the most recognized names in women?s rugby. Today, she chats with Eagle Katie Dowty.
PK: First off Katie, I want to thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to share a bit of yourself with the world.
Katie: No problem! I?m still on the clock, don?t tell my boss.

Katie Dowty

PK: So, tell me about you. Where did you grow up? Were you an only child? And what sports did you play?
Katie: My family moved around a bit growing up ? I was born in California, moved to New Mexico for a while, and moved back to California by middle school. I?ve always been an east-coaster at heart though, so it?s no surprise I ended up in Boston. My sister and brother, Carol and Greg, are both out in Boston now too, which is a blast. They both crack me up and we have a lot of fun together. Greg and I kind of grew up in ice rinks ? ?rink rats? ? him playing hockey and me figure skating. Yes, figure skating. Carol never really got into sports, but we love her anyway. ?;)

PK: From where and when did you graduate college? Is that where you started playing rugby?
Katie: I graduated from Harvard in ?06 and started playing as a Freshman. Yes, us nerds play sports too.

PK: What positions have you played?
Katie: Everywhere in the backline? 15 is my favorite though.

Puck Stops Here

PK: When did you debut with the USA Team (7s and 15s)? How many caps do you have?
Katie: Vegas in 2010 was my first event with the 7s National team. The recent Nations Cup in August of this year was my first cap for the 15s side (where I got 3 caps). So my grand total for 15s is 3, and I?ve been on 3 sevens tours. Hopefully just the beginnings!

PK: Which do you like better?
Katie: That?s like asking a parent to pick their favorite child. But secretly everyone has one, right?! So? sevens. I love the running and juking and always being in the action. Love it. The one-on-one showdowns, the quickness, the pretty passes, the tight knit feeling you get on such a small squad. 15s requires such specific skill sets in every position, while in 7s you need 12 all-around ?ballers? if you know what I mean. But I love 15s too, don?t get me wrong! Does this make me a bad parent?!!

PK: Do you like to figure skate more than rugby? (Thanks for that hint,?Melanie Denham, USA 15s Flanker)
Katie: Mel is just jealous of my sweet moves. Last time Mel put on skates, the skate guard had to kick her and Emilie Bydwell off the ice for racing and being a danger to everyone around them.

PK: When was your last US tour?
Katie: Nations Cup in Toronto (Aug. 2011). Can?t wait for Dubai this December? the first IRB-sanctioned Women?s International Sevens tournament! Can you imagine the women having an IRB Series like the men??! What a dream come true? and hopefully that?s where we?re headed!

PK: Did you have to visit the trainer for an injury with your hand? Tendonitis? (You best ?fess up or I will have to call on Mel again!):
Katie: Make sure you call me when it?s Mel?s turn to answer questions. YES ? I gave myself tendonitis playing Rock Band before Vegas this year. It was winter in New England? gotta pass the time somehow!!

PK: I guess I have tortured you enough. Who are your biggest influences in rugby?
Katie: Richard Ashfield has been my backs coach for many years, and I think slowly turned me into his mini-me at fullback. As for the pros, I love watching Benji Marshall and Matt Giteau and try my best to play like them! (Super bummed Giteau?s not at RWC?right now. Big mistake Australia. Mel?s definitely been the teammate to show me the intensity and drive it takes to keep pushing it on the field. I used to think there was no one as crazy intense as Mel, but I think I met her equal this year when I got to play with Pam Kosanke? ha! Pam?s taught me in a hurry what it means to REALLY want to win. Those two need to meet. And I can?t not mention Heather Hale ? definitely my idol at fullback.

Ashfield & Knight at Vegas 7s

PK: Do you think that there is more that can be done to promote and elevate women?s rugby? If so, what?
Katie: I think rugby being added into the Olympics should help jump start things over the next few years, but we have to be successful to get recognized. Start winning on the international stage and earn some attention ? that?s the best thing we could do.

PK: What is your highest aspiration in this game?
Katie: Everyone dreams about World Cups and now the Olympics of course ? that?s the ultimate. And when I?m done playing I?d like to make a career out of rugby. Do what you love. Hopefully by then colleges will have wised up and added varsity rugby programs throughout the country and coaching might actually be enough to put food on the table!

PK: Thank you so much for entertaining us today. Best of luck to you in reaching that. Keep training hard and learning?you will go beyond!
Katie: Thanks Phaidra! Love what you?re doing with this column!

Sun Country Airlines ? Always In The News for Good Reasons ...

Sun Country Airlines was born from the ashes of defunct Braniff Airlines. A small core group of former Braniff professionals decided to start their own small airline. Their flying hub of origin was St. Paul Minnesota, and they have become endeared to the hearts of Minnesotans over the years. They seemed to specialize in flying vacationers to many popular locations in Mexico, Caribbean, and the southern US. In fact, they developed a strong reputation for flying people who wanted to get away from it all. The company had a short-lived death spiral after 9/11 happened, but it seemed to only last a few months. We will tell you much more about this amazing smaller airliner. When venturing to the to the south of United States, in specific to Bristol, you may might need. Car Hire Albany County Airport This kind of is a solution which will be worthwhile taking into consideration regarding your traveling preferences..

It is hard for any airline to stay afloat sometimes because they just tend to operate on a thin margin. It wasn?t until 1999 that Sun Country Airlines was actually recognized as an airliner. Unfortunately that was a very difficult time for all airlines, and then to make matters worse they were embroiled in price wars with each other. But things were not going their way at all; indeed, they were soon looking at 60 million dollars in losses within two years. Unfortunately, they were not strong enough to endure the sanctions imposed on US carriers after Sept 11, 2001. Sadly, three months later at the end of 2001 saw the doors close and scheduled flights halted for Sun Country Airlines. Car Hire London Putney Bridge You will not regret it. Sun Country announced in July of this year their award of a top ten domestic airline according to Travel & Leisure Magazine. This is a big part of the recognition given by Travel & Leisure?s World?s Best Service Award for the year 2010. This means that Sun Country?s hard work is beginning to pay off as a runner for the Travel & Leisure World?s Best Service Award for 2010. This recognition puts Sun Country in the running for the World?s Best Service Award given By Travel & Leisure Magazine. You?ll be interested to know that the basis for this award is the survey questionnaires taken by actual travelers on various airlines. The service and attention customers receive are among the items graded in this award ranking. Only those domestic airline carriers eligible for the pool are included in the surveys. For Sun Country this is a huge achievement they take seriously.

KItchen Re-Design: Choosing Your New Kitchen Cabinets | Article ...

Are you bored with opening up the same kitchen cabinets, every day? Though many owners adore their kitchens, including their kitchen cabinets, there are some who are looking for a change. If you are one of those homeowners, those who are looking for a change, you might want to think about remodeling your kitchen, particularly your kitchen cabinets.

When it comes to kitchen remodeling, there is a common misconception that is erroneously assumed by many [**]. That misconception is exactly what kitchen transforming is. Many say that to transform a kitchen you need to switch everything, from the light fittings all of the way down to the floor tiles. While a large number of owners do decide to rework their entire kitchen, there are others who only decide to rework little portions of it. Whether you are looking to remodel your full kitchen, all at the same time, or you if are only looking to transform part of it, there is a good chance that you may be in the market for new kitchen cabinets; they're one of the most commonly reworked parts of a kitchen.

Though selecting a new set of kitchen cabinets could appear like a fairly easy task, it is one that you should not make on a whim. Since you will be stuck with these new kitchen cabinets, at least until you move or make a decision to remodel again, you'll need to make certain you get your first choice. There are a bunch of different ways you can do this. For the best results, you might need to go to your local home improvement store. When visiting one of your local home improvement stores, you should find a collection of kitchen cabinets on display; in fact , you may find a reasonably large number of them on show. Viewing each one of these kitchen cabinets is a good way to choose which cabinets would look good installed in your kitchen.

In addition to visiting your local home improvement store, you might also want to examine kitchen cabinets on the internet. Although the shipping for kitchen cabinets is often considered quite high, you could be capable of finding exactly what you were hunting for online. It is advised that you find either a web home improvement retailer or an individual who specializes in making their own kitchen cabinets. In reality if you are looking out for a unique set of kitchen cabinets, a set that you can't find anywhere else, you could be able to reserve a custom set of kitchen cabinets. The pricetag might be more than what you intended on paying, however as previously discussed, it is really important to get what you need, especially when reworking your kitchen.

When looking for the perfect set of kitchen cabinets, for your next kitchen reworking project, it's really important to keep a considerable number of things under consideration. One of those things is what you will be using your kitchen cabinets for. What you are using your kitchen cabinets for may impact on what you can and cannot have. For example, if you will be using your kitchen cabinets to store your food or your dishes, you'll need to make sure that you get cupboards that may offer you the most space. While ornamental kitchen cabinets are good they're sometimes limited on the space for storage that they have.

In addition to the dimensions of the storage space, it is also important to examine the scale of the kitchen cabinet itself. In the U. S. , most home improvement stores sell kitchen cabinets that aren't entirely put together, but they're often precut to size. It may be possible to change the measurements, but you might find it to be tough and costly to do so. Although you could be more concerned about the colour or design of a kitchen cupboard set, it's very important to remember the basics. Even the prettiest kitchen cupboard set will not do you any good if it can't be installed in your kitchen.

By keeping the previously mentioned points in mind , you ought to be in a position to go out and find the kitchen cupboard set that you were attempting to find. When you've found the kitchen cabinet set of your dreams, the remodeling can start. Whether you opt to install your own kitchen cabinets or you let a professional do it for you, your cabinets could be installed in as little as a day or 2.

If you're thinking about doing a kitchen renovation then one of the things you will need to consider is the type of kitchen cabinets you may use. Selecting the right kitchen cabinets can take effort and time so it's best if you do that ahead.

Know What's Creating Young Picky Eaters? Pressure to Eat (LiveScience.com)

You can lead a child to broccoli, but you can't make him eat it, the old saying goes. Oh, it doesn't? In any case, a new study suggests this is the reality for parents ? those who pressure their kids to chow down produce youngsters who are more likely to be picky eaters.

The answers given by 104 mothers of children ages 3 through 6 in the United Kingdom to questions about their kids' behaviors showed that urging them to eat significantly raised the chances the kids would dig in their heels and refuse.

The study also found that food avoidance was more common in children of certain emotional temperaments, as well as those of parents who use food to shape behavior and don't encourage a varied, balanced diet.

"Healthy children are born able to regulate their hunger and fullness," said study author Claire Farrow, a senior psychology lecturer at Loughborough University in Leicestershire, England.

"These findings support other research which has shown that if parents or caregivers override their children's signals of hunger and fullness ? as in pressuring the child to eat when not hungry ? then often children struggle to regulate their appetite appropriately in the future," Farrow told MyHealthNewsDaily.

And for kids who are already fussy eaters, "the use of pressure to eat can exacerbate problems and conflict at mealtimes," she said.

The study will be published in the December issue of the journal Appetite.

Gentle encouragement

The mothers in the study were predominantly white, well-educated and of healthy weight. They rated several of their kids' behaviors surrounding mealtimes, including food fussiness, slowness in eating, under-eating in response to emotional states and how quickly children said they felt full.
The moms also assessed their own "dietary restraint," or how often they tried to eat less than they would prefer to.

Those who reported more child fussiness over food also said they used much more pressure to get their children to eat, or restricted various foods for health reasons.

Mothers who said their children ate slowly also reported using more pressure to compel their kids to eat.

But isn't a certain amount of persuasion necessary, when it comes to broccoli or other nutritious foods? Farrow said it depends on whether the goal is to get kids to simply eat more or to try a new food.

"If the aim is to get the child to eat more food because the parent wants the child to, then this has shown to be counterproductive. Children should be allowed to stop eating when they are full if they are to be able to regulate their appetites appropriately," she said.

"However, if the aim is to get the child to try a new food that they do not want to, then some recent research has shown that gentle encouragement and positive reward for trying new foods can be a successful strategy," Farrow said.

Letting kids take the lead

Parents should offer a range of nutritious foods at mealtimes and snacks, and then sit back and let their children take the lead, said Dr. Anne Eglash, a clinical professor of family medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.

The same strategy is employed by breast-feeding mothers, she noted, who never really know how much milk their child consumes and allow their babies' natural hunger cues to dictate feedings.

"My personal feeling is that, yeah, we want our kids to eat broccoli, but how are they to eat broccoli when . . . crackers are on the table?" Eglash said. "If you take away those (less nutritious) choices and have only healthy foods there, kids will choose that."

Farrow and Eglash agreed that it's difficult to determine if parental control of feeding practices might produce kids who one day become obese or develop eating disorders. But both said it is possible to "covertly control" kids' feedings to encourage more nutritious choices or higher consumption simply by being consistent.

"Let kids drive when they're hungry, don't force feed them when they're not, don't fret about it and don't offer junk food to make up for when kids don't want to eat," Eglash recommended. "When kids are little, I tell parents: Don't worry, they won't starve themselves. You don't want food to be the power struggle or the big reward."

Pass it on: Kids who are pressured to eat might become picky eaters, but offering healthy options and encouraging kids to try new foods might stave off mealtime conflicts.

China must battle inflation, maintains growth-Zhou (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? China's economic outlook is positive, but it must keep battling inflation and be ready to counteract any external shocks, the country's top central banker said on Saturday.

People's Bank of China Governor Zhou Xiaochuan said China should prevent rapid growth from overheating what many viewed as the world's leading economic engine, and called on Europe to aggressively deal with the region's worsening debt crisis.

It would be unrealistic for anyone to hope China could dramatically accelerate its growth rate, and such a rate would not be sustainable, Zhou said at a press conference during this week's meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

"The reasonable expectation probably should be somewhere around 8 percent or 10 percent," he said.

China's economy grew at an annual rate of 9.5 percent in the second quarter, the slowest pace since the third quarter of 2009, but still faster than economists had expected.

Asked how he viewed the European debt crisis, Zhou said "We have to see if the euro zone countries can implement the decisions taken on July 21" before China can decide its response.

Euro zone leaders agreed on July 21 to allow the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF), a bailout fund, to buy bonds of distressed governments and give precautionary credit to governments before they are cut off from markets.

China also needed to stay flexible in its economic policies -- a signal that it could consider new stimulus measures, but Zhou stressed that battling inflation remains his top concern.

"There is no very quick, immediate way to bring down inflation. It takes time," he said, adding that economic uncertainty outside of China could also affects domestic inflation.

Earlier on Saturday, Zhou said in remarks to the IMF's steering committee that the central bank will reduce inflation in the short term without major disruptions to the economy, while facilitating growth over the medium and long term.

At this week's meetings of Group of 20 major economies and the IMF, officials have called for China to boost domestic consumption to help maintain global growth amid turmoil in Europe and weakness in the United States.

Zhou said on Thursday that the major emerging markets should find ways to boost internal demand.

With $3.2 trillion in reserves, Beijing has ample firepower should it choose to spend more, but it would have to be careful to avoid side effects such as more inflation and overinvestment in some projects.

SPEND IT ON CONSUMPTION-IMF

Meanwhile, IMF officials said on Saturday that Beijing would be better served if any new stimulus spending is aimed at consumers, not increased investment and bank credit.

Anoop Singh, the director of the IMF's Asia and Pacific Department, said China had room for such spending, but this would likely only be needed if its growth was severely hit by a systemic crisis in Europe that also weakened U.S. demand.

"Our sense is that China has room to return to greater fiscal stimulus if needed. Our sense is that it will help them if this is done through consumption," Singh told a news conference.

IMF officials said that spending it on reduced employment taxes and direct transfers to lower income people would avoid excesses that could result diverting it toward bank credit and investment projects. It also could be used to help build up more of a social safety net, which would increase consumption.

Even so, new spending would likely have less impact on the global economy than a previous round of nearly $600 billion in stimulus had in 2008, Singh said.

He added that Beijing's top priority was to address inflation and overheating pressures, including ensuring that credit quality does not deteriorate.

"In China, it is very important that the People's Bank set a clear target for its growth of bank credit for this year," Singh said. "And it's also very clear that China's addressing its inflation...remains the top priority."

He said that any new stimulus from Beijing, however, would likely have less of an impact on global growth than a previous round of spending in the 2008-2009 timeframe.

Health and Safety in your Workplace | Health

Health and Safety in your Workplace

The HSE website advises: ?It is an employer?s duty to protect the health, safety and welfare of their employees, and other people who might be affected by their business?, and that ?the employer must do whatever is reasonably practicable to achieve this.?

Good management of workplace safety represents not only good business practice, but also it can improve both performance of staff and the business in general. Unfortunately whilst complying and keeping pace with statutory change is extremely time consuming ? especially given the growth of the compensation culture ? it is essential to ensure you are not left exposed in the event of an accident or injury in your workplace.

Workplace Safety Training & Inspection
By outsourcing to a specialized health and safety advisor, you will be provided with bespoke safety awareness training and inspections which can be used to promote workplace safety, leading to an improved safety culture for all your staff. From shop floor to senior management, specialized training courses are tailored to suit your organisation?s needs.

Workplace Safety Management
Health and Safety management systems will help you to ensure that your staff are adequately trained and that they buy-in to the concept that managing risks within the workplace is as much their responsibility as yours. This will further reduce your exposure to accidents in the work place and subsequent investigations by the Local Authority or the HSE.

Writing a Health & Safety Policy from scratch
Any organisation with five or more employees is legally required to have a written Health & Safety Policy (Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 section 2(3)). It shouldn?t be a complicated document but it does need to be a concise summary, stating how your business manages safety.

If you?re thinking about writing your own Health and Safety Policy there are a few things you?ll need to consider. Your Policy should clearly set out how you manage Health and Safety, who is responsible and when things must be done. Starting a policy from scratch isn?t easy, particularly if you haven?t written one before and you don?t have access to professional advisors.

Some of the things you need to consider are:
A general statement
Responsibilities
Health and safety risks
Consultation with employees
Safe plant and equipment
Safe handling and use of substances
Information, instruction and supervision
Competency for tasks
Accidents, first aid and work related ill health
Monitoring ? accidents and work related sickness
Emergency procedures

Specialized Health and Safety advisors can write Health and Safety policies and managements systems for almost every industry; from construction through to care homes and retail to restaurants.

Updating an existing Health & Safety Policy
Once a Health and Safety policy has been written it?s important that it?s regularly reviewed and not just left on the shelf. This should be done whenever changes occur within the business and on a regular basis (at least annually).

Examples of when a Health and Safety Policy will need reviewing include:
If the work process changes
At the introduction of new technology or equipment
When any organisational changes occur
When Changes in legislation occur

If you need help writing a Health and Safety Policy or reviewing one that you have already written, contact specialized health and safety advisors.

Unlike many other Health and Safety advisors Bibbycas take the role of your statutory ?competent advisor?, proactively working alongside you to ensure that your business is safe.

Weather Report Mysterious Traveller Jazz Music CD Review ...

Not sure what?s happening with me on this one, but it seems like the more I listen to it, the better Mysterious Traveller gets. Mysterious Traveller simply put is one of their best CDs to date.

It?s a rare day indeed that I get a CD from an artist that I can truthfully say does not have a bad track in the bunch. I?m more than happy to announce that?s exactly what I must say about this one. There simply isn?t a bad one in the bunch. No fillers here at all, with each song standing tall on it?s own.

Mysterious Traveller is a nicely varied, mix of 7 tracks that are very well written and brilliantly performed songs by these clearly gifted musicians. With many of the songs displaying a lot of the kind emotion that makes for a really great listen. Clearly drawing from what I can only imagine are their own real life experiences. At different points touching on the most real emotions of love, heartbreak, pain, failed relationships and unattainable romance. They?re all here.

]]>

Listen to this CD and I believe you?ll find there?s not much to dis-like about it. The songs are inspired, the production is simply outstanding, and this is clearly the work of a group of musicians in top form. So much so that if you?re even mildly into Jazz music you?ll enjoy this album.

While the entire album is outstanding some of my favorites are track 2 ? American Tango, track 5 ? Blackthorn Rose, and track 7 ? Jungle Book

My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 1 ? Nubian Sundance. Good stuff!

Mariners hand Twins 11th straight loss, 5-4 (AP)

MINNEAPOLIS ? Most of the current Minnesota Twins weren't alive the last time the team struggled this badly. Kevin Slowey even dipped into Greek mythology to describe the frustration.

Ichiro Suzuki stopped Slowey's no-hitter with a two-out infield single in the sixth inning and added an RBI double in the seventh, spurring the Seattle Mariners to a 5-4 victory Wednesday night in Minnesota, the 11th straight defeat for the Twins.

"At this point in this clubhouse, it's like we're watching the fate of Sisyphus himself. Get to the top of that hill and just can't seem to figure it out, so it's been pretty tough," Slowey said, referencing the mythical king who, the story went, was punished for eternity by pushing a boulder up a steep hill only to watch it roll back down to the bottom each time.

This is the third-longest losing streak in Minnesota's 51-season history, behind a 14-game skid in 1982 and the 13 in a row they dropped in 1961, the first year here after the franchise moved west from Washington.

The Twins (59-95) still need two more wins to top their worst finish in Minnesota, 60-102 in 1982, and they've already secured the third-worst record the club has ever had.

With dozens of millions of dollars in high-salaried players long done for the season due to a variety of injuries, this pieced-together bunch of middling prospects, former first-round draft picks and the few veterans healthy enough to play has been figuratively banging their heads against the wall trying to end this September slide and finish on a less-dour note.

"I'd much rather win than get three or four hits," said rookie first baseman Chris Parmelee, who had three more hits, including an RBI single. He's batting .413 with nine RBIs in 13 games since being brought up from Double-A New Britain.

Mariners closer Brandon League, who escaped a ninth-inning, no-out, bases-loaded situation to preserve the win the night before, gave up a two-out RBI single to Trevor Plouffe before retiring Brian Dinkelman on a roller in front of the plate with two runners on.

League has 36 saves in 41 attempts this season. This was the first run he's allowed against the Twins in 16 innings.

Trayvon Robinson's two-run, two-out single in the seventh inning gave the Mariners the lead and sent Slowey (0-7) off the mound. He has lost all seven starts since he was recalled from Triple-A and reinserted in the rotation he helped anchor the past three-plus years. The right-hander began the season in the bullpen, got hurt and was sent to the minors to rehabilitate until returning a month ago.

Suzuki was the only baserunner to reach over the first five innings, when the shortstop Plouffe dropped the ball for an error while taking it out of his glove to start his throw. Kyle Seager and Dustin Ackley followed Suzuki's single in the sixth with consecutive sharply hit doubles, and Slowey's lead was suddenly gone.

Slowey hasn't walked a batter in his last 22 innings, and he struck out six, but this was another familiar start ? breezing through the early innings and hitting a big bump.

"I'm going to look at the first five innings and try to repeat that. We're running out of time. I'm running out of time," he said.

Plouffe grounded into a 1-2-3 double play with no outs and the bases loaded in the fifth against reliever Jeff Gray, and Dinkelman grounded out to end that inning. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire was upset that Plouffe wasn't more patient.

"That guy was in trouble, and we took him right out of trouble," Gardenhire said.

The Twins went 4 for 18 with runners in scoring position, and they're 24 for 151 ? a .159 batting average ? while losing 16 of their last 17 games.

Mariners starter Michael Pineda, in his final appearance of what has been a fine rookie season, gave up six hits, two walks and two runs while striking out two over four innings. He threw 81 pitches.

This was Pineda's 28th start, and the 22-year-old Dominican finished with 173 strikeouts in 171 innings with a 3.74 ERA.

"I'm very, very proud of me, because I finished strong," Pineda said.

The Twins won't be able to say that about this season.

NOTES: The Twins passed the 3 million mark in paid attendance for the second straight season and the third in franchise history. Their first was 1988. ... Of the 29 players suited up for this series for the Mariners, 17 of them weren't with the team when they visited Minnesota in May. ... RH Anthony Swarzak (3-7) pitches for the Twins in the series finale, the last day game of the season at Target Field, against Mariners RH Blake Beaven (5-5). Beaven is coming off an eight-inning shutout victory over division-leading Texas. Swarzak hasn't won since Aug. 3.

Stress Linked to Aggressive Breast Cancer | Psych Central News

By Rick Nauert PhD Senior News Editor

Stress Linked to Aggressive Breast Cancer A new study suggests psychological stress may play a role in the development of aggressive breast cancer, especially among minority populations.

?We found that after diagnosis, black and Hispanic breast cancer patients reported higher levels of stress than whites, and that stress was associated with tumor aggressiveness,? said Garth H. Rauscher, Ph.D., associate professor of epidemiology at the School of Public Health, University of Illinois at Chicago.

Rauscher and colleagues studied patient-reported perceptions of fear, anxiety and isolation, together referred to as psychosocial stress, and associations with breast cancer aggressiveness.

He cautioned that patients? stress levels were examined two to three months post-diagnosis.

Researchers studied nearly 1,000 recently diagnosed breast cancer patients; of those, 411 were non-Hispanic black, 397 were non-Hispanic white, and 181 were Hispanic.

Researchers discovered psychosocial stress scores were higher for both black and Hispanic patients compared to white patients.

?Those who reported higher levels of stress tended to have more aggressive tumors. However, what we don?t know is if we had asked them the same question a year or five years before diagnosis, would we have seen the same association between stress and breast cancer aggressiveness?

?It?s not clear what?s driving this association. It may be that the level of stress in these patients? lives influenced tumor aggressiveness.

?It may be that being diagnosed with a more aggressive tumor, with a more worrisome diagnosis and more stressful treatments, influenced reports of stress. It may be that both of these are playing a role in the association.

?We don?t know the answer to that question,? Rauscher said.

The research is being presented at the fourth American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Conference on The Science of Cancer Health Disparities.

Scientists discover rare theropod dinosaur wounded in action in southern Utah

ScienceDaily (Sep. 19, 2011) ? Raptor dinosaurs like the iconic Velociraptor from the movie franchise Jurassic Park are renowned for their "fear-factor." Their terrifying image has been popularized in part because members of this group possess a greatly enlarged talon on their foot -- analogous to a butcher's hook. Yet the function of the highly recurved claw on the foot of raptor dinosaurs has largely remained a mystery to paleontologists. This week a collaboration of scientists unveil a new species of raptor dinosaur discovered in southern Utah that sheds new light on this and several other long-standing questions in paleontology, including how dinosaurs evolved on the "lost continent" of Laramidia (western North America) during the Late Cretaceous -- a period known as the zenith of dinosaur diversity.

Their findings will be published in the journal PLoS ONE.

The new dinosaur -- dubbed Talos sampsoni -- is a member of a rare group of feathered, bird-like theropod dinosaurs whose evolution in North America has been a longstanding source of scientific debate, largely for lack of decent fossil material. Indeed, Talos represents the first definitive troodontid theropod to be named from the Late Cretaceous of North America in over 75 years. "Finding a decent specimen of this type of dinosaur in North America is like a lighting strike? it's a random event of thrilling proportions," said Lindsay Zanno, lead author of the study naming the new dinosaur. Zanno is an assistant professor of anatomy at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside and a research associate at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, Illinois. Other members of the research team include Mike Knell (a graduate student at Montana State University) who discovered the new specimen in 2008 in the Kaiparowits Formation of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument (GSENM), southern Utah; Bureau of Land Management (BLM) paleontologist Alan Titus, leader of a decade-long paleontology reconnaissance effort in the monument; David Varricchio, Associate Professor of Paleontology, Montana State University; and Patrick O'Connor, Associate Professor of Anatomy, Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Funding for the research was provided in part by the National Science Foundation, the Field Museum of Natural History, the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, and the Bureau of Land Management. Zanno's research was supported by a John Caldwell-Meeker Fellowship and by a Bucksbaum Fellowship for young scientists. The bones of Talos sampsoni will be on exhibit for the first time in the Past Worlds Observatory at the new Utah Museum of Natural History, Salt Lake City, Utah.

The Nature of the Beast Troodontid theropods are a group of feathered dinosaurs closely related to birds. Members of this group are among the smallest non-avian dinosaurs known (as small as 100 grams) and are considered among the most intelligent. The group is known almost exclusively from Asia and prior to the discovery of Talos sampsoni, only two species were recognized in the Late Cretaceous of North America -- one of which, the infamous Troodon, was one of the first dinosaurs ever named from North America. As a result of their distinctive teeth and the possible presence of seeds preserved as gut contents in one species, several scientists have proposed an omnivorous or herbivorous diet for at least some troodontids. Other species possess relatively blade-like teeth indicative of a carnivorous diet. Zanno's own work on theropod diet suggests that extensive plant eating was confined to more primitive members of the group, with more advanced members of the clade like Troodon and Talos likely consuming at least some prey.

Several troodontid specimens have recently been discovered that not only support a close relationship with birds but also preserve remarkable evidence of bird-like behavior. These include extraordinary specimens such as eggs and embryos within nests that document transitional phases in the evolution of bird-like reproductive physiology and egg-laying behavior, as well as specimens preserved in distinctive avian-like sleeping postures with their heads rotated back and tucked under their "wings." Other troodontids provide evidence of "four-winged" locomotor capabilities, and perhaps most extraordinary, plumage coloration.

With an estimated body mass of 38 kilograms, the newly discovered Talos sampsoni is neither the smallest nor largest troodontid known. Its skeleton indicates that the new species was much smaller and more slender than its famous cousin Troodon, which is known from sediments of the same age in the northern part of Laramidia (Alberta, Canada and Montana, USA). "Talos was fleet-footed and lightly built," Zanno says. "This little guy was a scrapper."

Interestingly, the holotype specimen of Talos also tells us something about theropod behavior, particularly raptor behavior. This is because the second toe -- that is, the one with the enlarged talon -- of the left foot of the new specimen is deformed, indicating that the animal suffered a fracture or bite during its life.

This Little Talos Takes a Beating

When the team first began studying the Talos specimen, they noticed some unusual features on the second digit of the left foot, but initially assumed they were related to the fact that it belonged to a new species. "When we realized we had evidence of an injury, the excitement was palpable," Zanno commented. "An injured specimen has a story to tell." That's because evidence of injury relates to function. The manner in which an animal is hurt can tell you something about what it was doing during life. An injury to the foot of a raptor dinosaur, for example, provides new evidence about the potential function of that toe and claw. In order to learn about the injury to the animal's foot, the team scanned the individual bones using a high-resolution Computed Tomography (CT) scanner, similar to those used by physicians to examine bones and other organs inside the human body.

"Although we could see damage on the exterior of the bone, our microCT approach was essential for characterizing the extent of the injury, and importantly, for allowing us to better constrain how long it had been between the time of injury and the time that this particular animal died," noted Patrick O'Connor, associate professor of anatomy at Ohio University. After additional CT scanning of other parts of the foot, Zanno and her team realized that the injury was restricted to the toe with the enlarged claw, and the rest of the foot was not impacted. More detailed study suggested that the injured toe was either bitten or fractured and then suffered from a localized infection.

"People have speculated that the talon on the foot of raptor dinosaurs was used to capture prey, fight with other members of the same species, or defend the animal against attack. Our interpretation supports the idea that these animals regularly put this toe in harm's way," says Zanno.

Perhaps even more interesting is the fact that the injured toe exhibits evidence of bone remodeling thought to have taken place over a period of many weeks to months, suggesting that Talos lived with a serious injury to the foot for quite a long time. "It is clear from the bone remodeling that this animal lived for quite some time after the initial injury and subsequent infection, and that whatever it typically did with the enlarged talon on the left foot, whether that be acquire prey or interact with other members of the species, it must have been capable of doing so fairly well with the one on the right foot," added O'Connor.

Trackways made by animals closely related to Talos suggest that they held the enlarged talon off the ground when walking. "Our data support the idea that the talon of raptor dinosaurs was not used for purposes as mundane as walking," Zanno commented. "It was an instrument meant for inflicting damage."

What's in a Name?

The name Talos pays homage to a mythological Greek figure of the same name, believed to have protected the island of Crete by throwing stones at invading ships. It is said that the Greek Talos, who was often depicted as a winged bronze figure, could run at lightening speed and circled the ancient island three times a day. The dinosaur Talos belongs to a group of theropods known to have feathery integument (and in some cases "wings"), lived on the small island continent of Laramidia or west North America during the Late Cretaceous, and was also a fast runner. The team chose the name Talos because of these similarities but also because the Greek Talos was said to have died from a wound to the ankle and it was clear that Talos had also suffered a serious wound to the foot. The species name "sampsoni" honors another famous figure -- Dr. Scott Sampson of the PBS series Dinosaur Train. Sampson, a research curator at the Utah Museum of Natural History and research faculty at the University of Utah, helped to spearhead a collaborative research effort known as the Kaiparowits Basin Project, a long-term research project that has been surveying and documenting the Late Cretaceous dinosaur fauna of the Kaiparowits Basin in southern Utah, with a focus on the Kaiparowits and Wahweap formations exposed in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument (GSENM). Thus far this effort has resulted in the discovery of up to a dozen new dinosaurs from GSENM that are challenging previous ideas regarding Late Cretaceous dinosaur evolution and diversity within Laramidia and spurring new ideas regarding dinosaur biogeography in the region.

A Tale of Two Continents

Dinosaurs of the Late Cretaceous were living in a greenhouse world. A warm and equitable global climate that was devoid of polar ice caps and above average spreading at mid-oceanic ridges caused massive flooding of low-lying continental areas and created expansive epicontinental seaways. In North America, a shallow seaway running from the Gulf of Mexico through to the Arctic Ocean divided the continent into two landmasses, East America (Appalachia) and West America (Laramidia) for several million years during the Late Cretaceous. It was during this time that the dinosaurs achieved their greatest diversity, and scientists have been working overtime to understand why. Take for example the dinosaurs of Laramidia. The natural assumption is that being large bodied, those dinosaurs that lived on the small island continent would have roamed the whole area. However, recent fossil discoveries, particularly new dinosaurs from the Kaiparowits Formation, tell us that the true pattern is exactly the opposite. Thus far the dinosaurs from the Kaiparowits Formation in southern Utah are entirely unique, even from those dinosaurs living just a few hundred miles to the north in what is now Montana and Alberta. Monument Paleontologist Alan Titus observed, "When we began looking in the remote Kaiparowits badlands we expected to see at least a few familiar faces. As it turns out, they are all new to science." And while recent discoveries from the Kaiparowits have substantiated this pattern for large-bodied herbivores like duck-bill and horned dinosaurs (for example Utahceratops), the pattern among small-bodied theropods was not clear. "We already knew that some of dinosaurs inhabiting southern Utah during the Late Cretaceous were unique," Zanno said, "but Talos tells us that the singularity of this ecosystem was not just restricted to one or two species. Rather, the whole area was like a lost world in and of itself."

A Monumental Discovery

Talos sampsoni is the newest member of a growing list of new dinosaur species that have been discovered in Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument (GSENM) in southern Utah. Former President Clinton founded the monument in 1996, in part to protect the world class paleontological resources entombed within its 1.9 million acres of unexplored territory. GSENM is one of the largest recently designated national monuments managed by the BLM, and one of the last pristine dinosaur graveyards in the US. The area has turned out to be a treasure trove of new dinosaur species, with at least 15 collected in just the past decade. Titus admits, "We had very few large fossils to substantiate the claim of 'World Class' paleontology when I started in 2000. Now, I feel GSENM could easily qualify as a world heritage site on the basis of its dinosaurs alone, dozens of which have been found preserving soft tissue." He also adds, "BLM support has been critical to the long term viability of the region's paleontology research and is paying off in countless ways both to the public and scientists."

Zanno, along with colleague Scott Sampson, named the first dinosaur from the monument -- Hagryphus giganteus -- in 2005. Hagryphus (widely touted in the press as the "turkey" dinosaur) is also a theropod dinosaur, but one that belongs to a different subgroup known as oviraptorosaurs (or egg thief reptiles). Other GSENM dinosaurs include five new horned dinosaurs including the recently described and bizarrely ornate Kosmoceratops and Utahceratops, three new duck-bill dinosaurs including the "toothy" Gryposaurus monumentensis, two new tyrannosaurs, as well as undescribed ankylosaurs (armored dinosaurs), marine reptiles, giant crocodyliforms, turtles, plants, and a host of other organisms.

The discovery of a new troodontid from the monument is the latest in a long string of incredible fossil discoveries from the area. "I was surprised when I learned that I had found a new dinosaur," Knell said. "It is a rare discovery and I feel very lucky to be part of the exciting research happening here in the monument." Knell stumbled across the remains of Talos sampsoni while scouring the badlands of the Kaiparowits Formation for fossil turtles as part of his dissertation research.

Work continues every year in GSENM and new, significant fossil finds are made every field season. Considering there are hundreds of thousands of acres of outcrop that have yet to be surveyed, it is no exaggeration to claim the region will remain an exciting research frontier for decades to come.

Beerschot apologizes for Fukushima taunts

Eija Kawashima, Patrick Vanoppen

updated 4:01 p.m. ET Sept. 20, 2011

BRUSSELS - Belgian league club Beerschot formally apologized to Japan's Eija Kawashima on Tuesday after some of its fans taunted the international goalkeeper with jeers of "Fukushima, Fukushima" during a match.

The referee interrupted the game against Lierse last month until the taunts stopped about Japan's nuclear power plant disaster.

When the goalie went to confront the fans when the taunting started, he was pelted with coins and beer. The club was fined $34,200 for the disruption.

Kawashima said the apology would mean a lot to the Japanese people.

The March 11 earthquake and tsunami wiped out entire towns. The waves inundated the Fukushima plant, triggering the worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl. Some 20,000 people are dead or missing.

Messi strikes thrice in Barcelona's 8-0 rout of Osasuna

Madrid, Sep 18

FC Barcelona bounced back to form this Saturday with an 8-0 destruction of Osasuna in the Spanish Premier Football League.

The Catalans controlled the match from start to finish and could have scored more goals had it not been for having seen three shots hit the woodwork and a fine performance from Osasuna goalkeeper Andres Fernandez.

Barcelona went into the match with rumors of a crisis following the recent 2-2 draw against Real Sociedad and AC Milan.

However, after 45 minutes it was clear that the rumours of Barcelona's demise were premature as Pep Guardiola's side produced an incredible display of football to romp into a 5-0 lead.

Guardiola's side had enjoyed 85 percent of possession and cruised into the lead thanks to two goals from Leonel Messi, one from Cesc Fabrigas, David Villa and an own goal from Osasuna defender Roversio.

Messi opened the scoring after just four minutes with an easy finish from Dani Alves' headed cross. Nine minutes later he turned provider with a threw ball that Cesc finished past keeper Fernandez.

Fernandez was proving to be his side's best player and did well to deny Villa and Cesc from adding to the lead. However, he was helpless in stopping Villa from scoring after the Barcelona keeper was totally unmarked in the penalty area.

The fourth goal came after Villa again ran through on goal and although Fernandez made a fine save, the rebound hit Roversio to end in the back of the net and there was still time in the half for Messi to slide home the fifth from a Cesc pass.

Barcelona could have let up the pace in the second half, but that didn't stop Messi scoring another goal after a magnificent turn of speed on the edge of the Osasuna penalty area.

He also found time to set Xavi up for a goal, while Villa scored his second of the night to make it a night Barca fans will not forget in a hurry.

It was the joint worst defeat in Osasuna's history. The last time the side from Pamplona had suffered such a defeat was in the 1958-59 season, against Real Madrid.

LOOKING AT LOHAN

It?s neither wise nor kind to scrutinize a growing teenage girl for changes in her appearance and then attribute them to cosmetic surgery.

But that?s what celebrity watchers have been busy doing to Ali Lohan, age 17, the younger sister of actress Lindsay Lohan.

Us magazine revved up the rumor mill by publishing photos of Ali?s changed face and commenting that it ?appeared more angular and her lips fuller. But is this new look the result of regular aging, or did Ali get major plastic surgery? ?

In an online survey, 84 percent of readers said they thought Ali, who works as a model, has had plastic surgery. Online commentators also said she had grown unhealthily thin.

But Ali?s spokesman said she ?has never had any type of plastic surgery in her life, nor has she ever considered it. Her success as a model lies with her natural looks and she has no interest in changing that.

?During the past two years, she has gone through a normal teenage growth spurt that has made her taller and slimmer. It has also slightly changed the composure of her face, all of which is typical of what happens to kids in their mid to late teens,? he said.

Family members also denied that Ali had gone under the knife or the needle, or has become too thin.

Lindsay Lohan said,?I love how haters pick on my sister yet every runway model is just as thin. My sister is gorgeous, and I?m so proud of her and her career.?

Plastic surgeon and blogger Dr. Tony Youn of Michigan said he believed that Ali has had no cosmetic treatments except lip injections.

Plastic surgeon and blogger Dr. John Di Saia of San Clemente and Orange agreed about Ali?s lips.

?While I am not sure whether or not true facial surgery has occurred, I think at the very least Ali has joined the ranks of the facial filler users. Her lips are obviously treated. Weight loss doesn?t make your lips larger,? he said.

Plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Rey of Beverly Hills said Ali apparently has had a nose job. ?Her nose appears narrower and the tip more defined,? he said.

Plastic surgeon Dr. Jon Turk of New York said Ali had a nose job, cheek augmentation via implants or fillers and lip augmentation. Cosmetic procedures gave her ?a narrower and more defined nose as well as a stronger jawline,? he said. ?The brow has been elevated either surgically or with Botox.?
