NY to require benching students with concussions
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) ? Starting next year, a new law in New York says student athletes suspected of suffering concussions should be immediately removed from games.
The legislation recently was signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo. It directs state health and education officials to draft regulations for schools on mild traumatic brain injuries. The regulations go into effect in July.
The law requires immediate benching of any student who has or may have suffered a concussion in a school-related activity.
Students can play again only after they are symptom-free for 24 hours and cleared by a doctor.
Concussions are usually temporary but can cause headaches and problems with concentration, memory, judgment, balance and coordination.
Sponsors say athletes need to be protected from further injury and possible long-term effects.
Several states have already passed similar laws.

Oil Poll: Human Rights or Environment? ? The Business Ethics Blog
A few days ago, I blogged about the notion of ?ethical oil?. That?s the label one advocacy group is applying to oil from Canada?s oilsands, to distinguish it from oil from Saudi Arabia, a country with a less-than-admirable human rights record. That, of course, is a gross oversimplification.
But it?s still an interesting ethical issue. I said,
In principle, we could look at this as a matter of ?choose your poison.? Do you want the oil that?s associated with human rights violations, or the oil that?s associated with environmental destruction?
It?s important to point out that there are two reasons this is a false dilemma. One is that consumers don?t actually get to choose: oil isn?t labeled by country of origin. The other reason is that neither of the nations named above is perfect, from a social and human rights point of view; nor is either country perfect from the point of view of environmental protection.
But it?s a philosophical thought-experiment worth conducting. So, let?s imagine: you?re driving your car, and your tank is near empty. You?re at an intersection with two gas stations. One is the Saudi brand and the other is the oilsands brand. Which one would you choose?
(Again, I do realize this is a gross oversimplification. It?s not a real choice. It?s a thought-experiment to get you to think about the relative value of the environment and human rights. Let?s all be thankful it?s not a choice we actually have to make.)

During his sit-down on the CNN show taped earlier this week and set to air Friday, Jones reportedly got miffed when Morgan asked him about his reputation as a ladies man. Jones?who has been linked to Hayden Panettiere, Pamela Anderson and Halle Berry, among others?up and left the studio.
But that wasn't the end of it.
Afterward, Jones and Morgan took to Twitter in a game of upsmanship.

"For the record I'm not ashamed to admit I stormed off @piersmorgan tonight," Jones tweeted. "His line of questing was highly offensive. You judge #thisfriday."
When a fan asked Morgan, "Hey, @piersmorgan, who is @SteveJones?" he tweeted, "No idea...Had him thrown off my set yesterday for lewd conduct."
So there you have it: walk off vs. thrown off. While we aren't choosing sides until we see the videotape tomorrow, we sure O'Donnell wouldn't blame Jones for bailing.
