Cantor says children of illegal immigrants should get U.S. citizenship

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A top U.S. Republican lawmaker said on Sunday he would support granting citizenship to children who are in the country illegally in a sign that conservatives who oppose immigration amnesty will be playing defense as Congress takes on immigration reform in the coming months.

Representative Eric Cantor, the No. 2 Republican in the House of Representatives, said Congress could make quick progress on immigration if lawmakers agreed to give citizenship to children - an idea he opposed when it came up for a vote in 2010 as the DREAM Act.

"The best place to begin, I think, is with the children. Let's go ahead and get that under our belt, put a win on the board," Cantor said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Cantor is leading an effort to improve his party's image as many Republicans worry they will be consigned to irrelevancy in coming years if they do not reach out to the fast-growing Latino electorate, which strongly supports immigration reform.

President Barack Obama has made immigration reform a top priority of his second term in office and a bipartisan group of senators is working to draft legislation that would tackle the issue in a comprehensive manner, rather than the piecemeal approach that Cantor suggested.

Republican Senator John McCain, who is involved in that effort, said his group aims to provide a path to citizenship for all of those who are in the United States illegally, not just children, as long as border security is tightened.

"There are 11 million people living in the shadows. I believe that they deserve to come out of the shadows," McCain said on "Fox News Sunday."

That could be a tough sell for many of Cantor's Republicans in the House, who say it would amount to amnesty for those who willingly broke the law.

"We want to make sure we're compassionate and sensitive to their plight - these kids know no other place as home. On the other hand, we are a country of laws," Cantor said.

Cantor declined to say whether he would support a pathway to citizenship for adults as well. He could be forced to take a stand one way or the other if McCain and his colleagues manage to pass their legislation out of the Senate.

Dick Durbin, the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate, said Cantor's support for citizenship for children was a positive sign. But he said his colleagues in the Senate would be pushing for more.

"I've met these young people, and they will tell you, yes, I want a future, but what about my mom and dad?" Durbin said on "Meet the Press." "We're not stopping with the DREAM act, we're beginning with the DREAM act and pushing forward."

Americans tied 1-1 with Italy in Fed Cup

RIMINI, Italy (AP) ? American Varvara Lepchenko won in her Fed Cup singles debut to lift the United States to a 1-1 tie against Italy on Saturday.

In other Group I first-round matches, the Czech Republic led Australia 2-0, while Slovakia-Serbia and Japan-Russia were tied 1-1.

Lepchenko rallied past Roberta Vinci 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 after Sara Errani defeated Jamie Hampton 6-2, 6-1.

Vinci struggled with a leg cramp in the final set, which had seven breaks of serve. She had treatment on her left thigh and rallied from 5-1 down in the third to tie it 5-5.

Lepchenko broke back and served out the match.

The seventh-ranked Errani needed just over an hour to win over the 64th-ranked Hampton.

The doubles on Sunday will feature Melanie Oudin and Liezel Huber against Nastassja Burnett and Karin Knapp.

Varvara Lepchenko will play Errani in reverse singles.

Serena and Venus Williams and Sloane Stephens are injured, so Hampton and Lepchenko made their Fed Cup singles debuts. Veterans Francesca Schiavone and Flavia Pennetta, who have struggled lately, were left off Italy's squad.

Italy beat the U.S. in back-to-back Fed Cup finals in 2009 and 2010.

In Ostrava, Czech Republic, Petra Kvitova defeated Jarmila Gajdosova 7-6 (2), 6-3 before Lucie Safarova edged Sam Stosur 7-6 (6), 7-6 (4). The Czechs are one win away from the semifinals against Italy or the United States.

In Nis, Serbia, Dominika Cibulkova led Vesna Dolonc 6-4, 5-4 when a leg muscle strain forced her to retire after Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova defeated Bojana Jovanovski 7-5, 6-2.

In Moscow, Ayumi Morita beat Ekaterina Makarova 6-2, 6-2, and Maria Kirilenko defeated veteran Kimiko Date-Krumm 7-6 (3), 6-4.

Gioteck GC2 PS3 controller tweaks pressure sensitivity on the fly, tips hat to Xbox 360

Love your PlayStation 3, but prefer Microsoft's controller layout? You've got options, the latest being Gioteck's GC-2 PS3 gamepad. Adopting the Xbox 360 controller layout, the GC-2 appears to do an admirable job of repositioning your thumbs, but its appeal lies in how much you'll have to twiddle those digits. Hidden among the controller's bevy of commonplace features (wireless connectivity, a turbo button and force feedback) is a thumbstick sensitivity toggle -- allowing gamers to switch between four different levels pressure sensitivity. Hardly revolutionary, but it's nice to know there are options when in-game settings don't cut it. PlayStation 3 owners can pick up the GC-2 now for $40, and Gioteck says a Wii U variant will be available in April. See the full press release for yourself after the break.

Obama to visit NC, Atlanta after State of Union

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama will travel to two Southern states after his State of the Union address on Tuesday.

It's a tradition for presidents to launch a post-speech tour to pitch their proposals to the public.

A stop in Asheville, N.C., on Wednesday will be followed by a visit Thursday to Atlanta.

The White House hasn't said what Obama will do in either city. But in recent weeks Obama has left Washington to rally the public behind his plans for immigration reform and gun control.

Both Georgia and North Carolina were among the states Obama lost in November's election.

Daimler sees Q4 profit rise on one-off gain

BERLIN (AP) ? A one-off gain from the sale of an investment helped boost German automaker Daimler AG's net profit in the fourth quarter of 2012, offsetting the impact of higher costs.

The company, based in Stuttgart, said Thursday that net profit was ?2.3 billion ($3.1 billion), up from ?1.79 billion in the same quarter last year, thanks to the sale of a 7.5 percent stake in European defense company EADS.

That sale, which reaped a ?709 million gain, masked a 2 percent fall in Daimler's operating profit in the period, to ?8.6 billion from ?8.8 billion in 2011 as the company invested heavily in new plants and models.

"The past financial year was overall a strong year for Daimler with some great achievements, but also with clear potential for improvement," said CEO Dieter Zetzche.

"Notwithstanding our success and the numerous pioneering investments in 2012, it is a fact that we did not reach our own targets for earnings and profitability."

Looking ahead, Daimler said that major markets will remain week in the first half of 2013, but that with the introduction of new models and as efficiency measures start to pay dividends, "earnings are expected to improve in the second half of 2013 compared with the level of the first half."

Operating profit from ongoing business fell to ?8.1 billion in 2012 from ?9 billion in 2011, whereas the company had expected it to remain flat.

Now, Daimler said is predicting that its operating profit from ongoing business for 2013 should reach the level of 2012.

Daimler saw a 4 percent increase in sales in 2012 to 2.2 million vehicles, up from 2.1 million in 2011.

Mercedes-Benz sales rose 5 percent to 1.45 million vehicles from 1.38 the year before, while Daimler Trucks saw a 9 percent increase to 462,000 vehicles from 426,000 in 2011.

But Mercedes-Benz Vans posted a 4 percent drop to 252,000 vehicles and the Daimler Buses division saw a 19 percent drop to 32,000 vehicles.

Daimler shares were up 2.4 percent to ?44.1 in afternoon Frankfurt trading.
