RUGBY Q&A: PHAIDRA KNIGHT INTERVIEWS EAGLE KATIE ...

Phaidra

CLICK

A perennial Team USA Eagle, Phaidra Knight is one of the most recognized names in women?s rugby. Today, she chats with Eagle Katie Dowty.
PK: First off Katie, I want to thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to share a bit of yourself with the world.
Katie: No problem! I?m still on the clock, don?t tell my boss.

Katie Dowty

PK: So, tell me about you. Where did you grow up? Were you an only child? And what sports did you play?
Katie: My family moved around a bit growing up ? I was born in California, moved to New Mexico for a while, and moved back to California by middle school. I?ve always been an east-coaster at heart though, so it?s no surprise I ended up in Boston. My sister and brother, Carol and Greg, are both out in Boston now too, which is a blast. They both crack me up and we have a lot of fun together. Greg and I kind of grew up in ice rinks ? ?rink rats? ? him playing hockey and me figure skating. Yes, figure skating. Carol never really got into sports, but we love her anyway. ?;)

PK: From where and when did you graduate college? Is that where you started playing rugby?
Katie: I graduated from Harvard in ?06 and started playing as a Freshman. Yes, us nerds play sports too.

PK: What positions have you played?
Katie: Everywhere in the backline? 15 is my favorite though.

Puck Stops Here

PK: When did you debut with the USA Team (7s and 15s)? How many caps do you have?
Katie: Vegas in 2010 was my first event with the 7s National team. The recent Nations Cup in August of this year was my first cap for the 15s side (where I got 3 caps). So my grand total for 15s is 3, and I?ve been on 3 sevens tours. Hopefully just the beginnings!

PK: Which do you like better?
Katie: That?s like asking a parent to pick their favorite child. But secretly everyone has one, right?! So? sevens. I love the running and juking and always being in the action. Love it. The one-on-one showdowns, the quickness, the pretty passes, the tight knit feeling you get on such a small squad. 15s requires such specific skill sets in every position, while in 7s you need 12 all-around ?ballers? if you know what I mean. But I love 15s too, don?t get me wrong! Does this make me a bad parent?!!

PK: Do you like to figure skate more than rugby? (Thanks for that hint,?Melanie Denham, USA 15s Flanker)
Katie: Mel is just jealous of my sweet moves. Last time Mel put on skates, the skate guard had to kick her and Emilie Bydwell off the ice for racing and being a danger to everyone around them.

PK: When was your last US tour?
Katie: Nations Cup in Toronto (Aug. 2011). Can?t wait for Dubai this December? the first IRB-sanctioned Women?s International Sevens tournament! Can you imagine the women having an IRB Series like the men??! What a dream come true? and hopefully that?s where we?re headed!

PK: Did you have to visit the trainer for an injury with your hand? Tendonitis? (You best ?fess up or I will have to call on Mel again!):
Katie: Make sure you call me when it?s Mel?s turn to answer questions. YES ? I gave myself tendonitis playing Rock Band before Vegas this year. It was winter in New England? gotta pass the time somehow!!

PK: I guess I have tortured you enough. Who are your biggest influences in rugby?
Katie: Richard Ashfield has been my backs coach for many years, and I think slowly turned me into his mini-me at fullback. As for the pros, I love watching Benji Marshall and Matt Giteau and try my best to play like them! (Super bummed Giteau?s not at RWC?right now. Big mistake Australia. Mel?s definitely been the teammate to show me the intensity and drive it takes to keep pushing it on the field. I used to think there was no one as crazy intense as Mel, but I think I met her equal this year when I got to play with Pam Kosanke? ha! Pam?s taught me in a hurry what it means to REALLY want to win. Those two need to meet. And I can?t not mention Heather Hale ? definitely my idol at fullback.

Ashfield & Knight at Vegas 7s

PK: Do you think that there is more that can be done to promote and elevate women?s rugby? If so, what?
Katie: I think rugby being added into the Olympics should help jump start things over the next few years, but we have to be successful to get recognized. Start winning on the international stage and earn some attention ? that?s the best thing we could do.

PK: What is your highest aspiration in this game?
Katie: Everyone dreams about World Cups and now the Olympics of course ? that?s the ultimate. And when I?m done playing I?d like to make a career out of rugby. Do what you love. Hopefully by then colleges will have wised up and added varsity rugby programs throughout the country and coaching might actually be enough to put food on the table!

PK: Thank you so much for entertaining us today. Best of luck to you in reaching that. Keep training hard and learning?you will go beyond!
Katie: Thanks Phaidra! Love what you?re doing with this column!

Sun Country Airlines ? Always In The News for Good Reasons ...

Sun Country Airlines was born from the ashes of defunct Braniff Airlines. A small core group of former Braniff professionals decided to start their own small airline. Their flying hub of origin was St. Paul Minnesota, and they have become endeared to the hearts of Minnesotans over the years. They seemed to specialize in flying vacationers to many popular locations in Mexico, Caribbean, and the southern US. In fact, they developed a strong reputation for flying people who wanted to get away from it all. The company had a short-lived death spiral after 9/11 happened, but it seemed to only last a few months. We will tell you much more about this amazing smaller airliner. When venturing to the to the south of United States, in specific to Bristol, you may might need. Car Hire Albany County Airport This kind of is a solution which will be worthwhile taking into consideration regarding your traveling preferences..

It is hard for any airline to stay afloat sometimes because they just tend to operate on a thin margin. It wasn?t until 1999 that Sun Country Airlines was actually recognized as an airliner. Unfortunately that was a very difficult time for all airlines, and then to make matters worse they were embroiled in price wars with each other. But things were not going their way at all; indeed, they were soon looking at 60 million dollars in losses within two years. Unfortunately, they were not strong enough to endure the sanctions imposed on US carriers after Sept 11, 2001. Sadly, three months later at the end of 2001 saw the doors close and scheduled flights halted for Sun Country Airlines. Car Hire London Putney Bridge You will not regret it. Sun Country announced in July of this year their award of a top ten domestic airline according to Travel & Leisure Magazine. This is a big part of the recognition given by Travel & Leisure?s World?s Best Service Award for the year 2010. This means that Sun Country?s hard work is beginning to pay off as a runner for the Travel & Leisure World?s Best Service Award for 2010. This recognition puts Sun Country in the running for the World?s Best Service Award given By Travel & Leisure Magazine. You?ll be interested to know that the basis for this award is the survey questionnaires taken by actual travelers on various airlines. The service and attention customers receive are among the items graded in this award ranking. Only those domestic airline carriers eligible for the pool are included in the surveys. For Sun Country this is a huge achievement they take seriously.

KItchen Re-Design: Choosing Your New Kitchen Cabinets | Article ...

Are you bored with opening up the same kitchen cabinets, every day? Though many owners adore their kitchens, including their kitchen cabinets, there are some who are looking for a change. If you are one of those homeowners, those who are looking for a change, you might want to think about remodeling your kitchen, particularly your kitchen cabinets.

When it comes to kitchen remodeling, there is a common misconception that is erroneously assumed by many [**]. That misconception is exactly what kitchen transforming is. Many say that to transform a kitchen you need to switch everything, from the light fittings all of the way down to the floor tiles. While a large number of owners do decide to rework their entire kitchen, there are others who only decide to rework little portions of it. Whether you are looking to remodel your full kitchen, all at the same time, or you if are only looking to transform part of it, there is a good chance that you may be in the market for new kitchen cabinets; they're one of the most commonly reworked parts of a kitchen.

Though selecting a new set of kitchen cabinets could appear like a fairly easy task, it is one that you should not make on a whim. Since you will be stuck with these new kitchen cabinets, at least until you move or make a decision to remodel again, you'll need to make certain you get your first choice. There are a bunch of different ways you can do this. For the best results, you might need to go to your local home improvement store. When visiting one of your local home improvement stores, you should find a collection of kitchen cabinets on display; in fact , you may find a reasonably large number of them on show. Viewing each one of these kitchen cabinets is a good way to choose which cabinets would look good installed in your kitchen.

In addition to visiting your local home improvement store, you might also want to examine kitchen cabinets on the internet. Although the shipping for kitchen cabinets is often considered quite high, you could be capable of finding exactly what you were hunting for online. It is advised that you find either a web home improvement retailer or an individual who specializes in making their own kitchen cabinets. In reality if you are looking out for a unique set of kitchen cabinets, a set that you can't find anywhere else, you could be able to reserve a custom set of kitchen cabinets. The pricetag might be more than what you intended on paying, however as previously discussed, it is really important to get what you need, especially when reworking your kitchen.

When looking for the perfect set of kitchen cabinets, for your next kitchen reworking project, it's really important to keep a considerable number of things under consideration. One of those things is what you will be using your kitchen cabinets for. What you are using your kitchen cabinets for may impact on what you can and cannot have. For example, if you will be using your kitchen cabinets to store your food or your dishes, you'll need to make sure that you get cupboards that may offer you the most space. While ornamental kitchen cabinets are good they're sometimes limited on the space for storage that they have.

In addition to the dimensions of the storage space, it is also important to examine the scale of the kitchen cabinet itself. In the U. S. , most home improvement stores sell kitchen cabinets that aren't entirely put together, but they're often precut to size. It may be possible to change the measurements, but you might find it to be tough and costly to do so. Although you could be more concerned about the colour or design of a kitchen cupboard set, it's very important to remember the basics. Even the prettiest kitchen cupboard set will not do you any good if it can't be installed in your kitchen.

By keeping the previously mentioned points in mind , you ought to be in a position to go out and find the kitchen cupboard set that you were attempting to find. When you've found the kitchen cabinet set of your dreams, the remodeling can start. Whether you opt to install your own kitchen cabinets or you let a professional do it for you, your cabinets could be installed in as little as a day or 2.

If you're thinking about doing a kitchen renovation then one of the things you will need to consider is the type of kitchen cabinets you may use. Selecting the right kitchen cabinets can take effort and time so it's best if you do that ahead.

Know What's Creating Young Picky Eaters? Pressure to Eat (LiveScience.com)

You can lead a child to broccoli, but you can't make him eat it, the old saying goes. Oh, it doesn't? In any case, a new study suggests this is the reality for parents ? those who pressure their kids to chow down produce youngsters who are more likely to be picky eaters.

The answers given by 104 mothers of children ages 3 through 6 in the United Kingdom to questions about their kids' behaviors showed that urging them to eat significantly raised the chances the kids would dig in their heels and refuse.

The study also found that food avoidance was more common in children of certain emotional temperaments, as well as those of parents who use food to shape behavior and don't encourage a varied, balanced diet.

"Healthy children are born able to regulate their hunger and fullness," said study author Claire Farrow, a senior psychology lecturer at Loughborough University in Leicestershire, England.

"These findings support other research which has shown that if parents or caregivers override their children's signals of hunger and fullness ? as in pressuring the child to eat when not hungry ? then often children struggle to regulate their appetite appropriately in the future," Farrow told MyHealthNewsDaily.

And for kids who are already fussy eaters, "the use of pressure to eat can exacerbate problems and conflict at mealtimes," she said.

The study will be published in the December issue of the journal Appetite.

Gentle encouragement

The mothers in the study were predominantly white, well-educated and of healthy weight. They rated several of their kids' behaviors surrounding mealtimes, including food fussiness, slowness in eating, under-eating in response to emotional states and how quickly children said they felt full.
The moms also assessed their own "dietary restraint," or how often they tried to eat less than they would prefer to.

Those who reported more child fussiness over food also said they used much more pressure to get their children to eat, or restricted various foods for health reasons.

Mothers who said their children ate slowly also reported using more pressure to compel their kids to eat.

But isn't a certain amount of persuasion necessary, when it comes to broccoli or other nutritious foods? Farrow said it depends on whether the goal is to get kids to simply eat more or to try a new food.

"If the aim is to get the child to eat more food because the parent wants the child to, then this has shown to be counterproductive. Children should be allowed to stop eating when they are full if they are to be able to regulate their appetites appropriately," she said.

"However, if the aim is to get the child to try a new food that they do not want to, then some recent research has shown that gentle encouragement and positive reward for trying new foods can be a successful strategy," Farrow said.

Letting kids take the lead

Parents should offer a range of nutritious foods at mealtimes and snacks, and then sit back and let their children take the lead, said Dr. Anne Eglash, a clinical professor of family medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.

The same strategy is employed by breast-feeding mothers, she noted, who never really know how much milk their child consumes and allow their babies' natural hunger cues to dictate feedings.

"My personal feeling is that, yeah, we want our kids to eat broccoli, but how are they to eat broccoli when . . . crackers are on the table?" Eglash said. "If you take away those (less nutritious) choices and have only healthy foods there, kids will choose that."

Farrow and Eglash agreed that it's difficult to determine if parental control of feeding practices might produce kids who one day become obese or develop eating disorders. But both said it is possible to "covertly control" kids' feedings to encourage more nutritious choices or higher consumption simply by being consistent.

"Let kids drive when they're hungry, don't force feed them when they're not, don't fret about it and don't offer junk food to make up for when kids don't want to eat," Eglash recommended. "When kids are little, I tell parents: Don't worry, they won't starve themselves. You don't want food to be the power struggle or the big reward."

Pass it on: Kids who are pressured to eat might become picky eaters, but offering healthy options and encouraging kids to try new foods might stave off mealtime conflicts.

China must battle inflation, maintains growth-Zhou (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? China's economic outlook is positive, but it must keep battling inflation and be ready to counteract any external shocks, the country's top central banker said on Saturday.

People's Bank of China Governor Zhou Xiaochuan said China should prevent rapid growth from overheating what many viewed as the world's leading economic engine, and called on Europe to aggressively deal with the region's worsening debt crisis.

It would be unrealistic for anyone to hope China could dramatically accelerate its growth rate, and such a rate would not be sustainable, Zhou said at a press conference during this week's meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

"The reasonable expectation probably should be somewhere around 8 percent or 10 percent," he said.

China's economy grew at an annual rate of 9.5 percent in the second quarter, the slowest pace since the third quarter of 2009, but still faster than economists had expected.

Asked how he viewed the European debt crisis, Zhou said "We have to see if the euro zone countries can implement the decisions taken on July 21" before China can decide its response.

Euro zone leaders agreed on July 21 to allow the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF), a bailout fund, to buy bonds of distressed governments and give precautionary credit to governments before they are cut off from markets.

China also needed to stay flexible in its economic policies -- a signal that it could consider new stimulus measures, but Zhou stressed that battling inflation remains his top concern.

"There is no very quick, immediate way to bring down inflation. It takes time," he said, adding that economic uncertainty outside of China could also affects domestic inflation.

Earlier on Saturday, Zhou said in remarks to the IMF's steering committee that the central bank will reduce inflation in the short term without major disruptions to the economy, while facilitating growth over the medium and long term.

At this week's meetings of Group of 20 major economies and the IMF, officials have called for China to boost domestic consumption to help maintain global growth amid turmoil in Europe and weakness in the United States.

Zhou said on Thursday that the major emerging markets should find ways to boost internal demand.

With $3.2 trillion in reserves, Beijing has ample firepower should it choose to spend more, but it would have to be careful to avoid side effects such as more inflation and overinvestment in some projects.

SPEND IT ON CONSUMPTION-IMF

Meanwhile, IMF officials said on Saturday that Beijing would be better served if any new stimulus spending is aimed at consumers, not increased investment and bank credit.

Anoop Singh, the director of the IMF's Asia and Pacific Department, said China had room for such spending, but this would likely only be needed if its growth was severely hit by a systemic crisis in Europe that also weakened U.S. demand.

"Our sense is that China has room to return to greater fiscal stimulus if needed. Our sense is that it will help them if this is done through consumption," Singh told a news conference.

IMF officials said that spending it on reduced employment taxes and direct transfers to lower income people would avoid excesses that could result diverting it toward bank credit and investment projects. It also could be used to help build up more of a social safety net, which would increase consumption.

Even so, new spending would likely have less impact on the global economy than a previous round of nearly $600 billion in stimulus had in 2008, Singh said.

He added that Beijing's top priority was to address inflation and overheating pressures, including ensuring that credit quality does not deteriorate.

"In China, it is very important that the People's Bank set a clear target for its growth of bank credit for this year," Singh said. "And it's also very clear that China's addressing its inflation...remains the top priority."

He said that any new stimulus from Beijing, however, would likely have less of an impact on global growth than a previous round of spending in the 2008-2009 timeframe.

Health and Safety in your Workplace | Health

Health and Safety in your Workplace

The HSE website advises: ?It is an employer?s duty to protect the health, safety and welfare of their employees, and other people who might be affected by their business?, and that ?the employer must do whatever is reasonably practicable to achieve this.?

Good management of workplace safety represents not only good business practice, but also it can improve both performance of staff and the business in general. Unfortunately whilst complying and keeping pace with statutory change is extremely time consuming ? especially given the growth of the compensation culture ? it is essential to ensure you are not left exposed in the event of an accident or injury in your workplace.

Workplace Safety Training & Inspection
By outsourcing to a specialized health and safety advisor, you will be provided with bespoke safety awareness training and inspections which can be used to promote workplace safety, leading to an improved safety culture for all your staff. From shop floor to senior management, specialized training courses are tailored to suit your organisation?s needs.

Workplace Safety Management
Health and Safety management systems will help you to ensure that your staff are adequately trained and that they buy-in to the concept that managing risks within the workplace is as much their responsibility as yours. This will further reduce your exposure to accidents in the work place and subsequent investigations by the Local Authority or the HSE.

Writing a Health & Safety Policy from scratch
Any organisation with five or more employees is legally required to have a written Health & Safety Policy (Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 section 2(3)). It shouldn?t be a complicated document but it does need to be a concise summary, stating how your business manages safety.

If you?re thinking about writing your own Health and Safety Policy there are a few things you?ll need to consider. Your Policy should clearly set out how you manage Health and Safety, who is responsible and when things must be done. Starting a policy from scratch isn?t easy, particularly if you haven?t written one before and you don?t have access to professional advisors.

Some of the things you need to consider are:
A general statement
Responsibilities
Health and safety risks
Consultation with employees
Safe plant and equipment
Safe handling and use of substances
Information, instruction and supervision
Competency for tasks
Accidents, first aid and work related ill health
Monitoring ? accidents and work related sickness
Emergency procedures

Specialized Health and Safety advisors can write Health and Safety policies and managements systems for almost every industry; from construction through to care homes and retail to restaurants.

Updating an existing Health & Safety Policy
Once a Health and Safety policy has been written it?s important that it?s regularly reviewed and not just left on the shelf. This should be done whenever changes occur within the business and on a regular basis (at least annually).

Examples of when a Health and Safety Policy will need reviewing include:
If the work process changes
At the introduction of new technology or equipment
When any organisational changes occur
When Changes in legislation occur

If you need help writing a Health and Safety Policy or reviewing one that you have already written, contact specialized health and safety advisors.

Unlike many other Health and Safety advisors Bibbycas take the role of your statutory ?competent advisor?, proactively working alongside you to ensure that your business is safe.
