Wenatchee football camp a chance for team's to assess talent

WENATCHEE ? The Wenatchee Football Team Camp provides the perfect opportunity to shore up depth charts and fill in the last few missing pieces before pre-season practice heats up in late August.

Wenatchee High School will host 11 teams, including cross-river rival Eastmont, for a five-day camp that begins Sunday. For most teams, it?s the last chance to evaluate players before what Wenatchee coach Scott Devereaux calls ?dead time,? Aug. 1-21.

?You get a lot of reps with your kids against quality opponents,? he said of the camp.

The Panthers are in the same boat. Heading into Sunday, Devereaux has a good grasp on what he will be working with this fall, but the upcoming camp will help him make final decisions and discover new playmakers that could impact the 2013 season.

?We?re trying to still establish who our starters might be,? he said. ?Of course, it?s all written in light pencil right now. ... We kind of have a depth chart that we?re always changing in the summer.?

Wenatchee has hosted as many as 15 schools at the camp, which is an annual tradition. Although the numbers are down this summer, that might not be a bad thing. Devereaux said having a smaller camp ? there will be about 750 players as opposed to around 900 in years past ? is ?kind of a relief.?

Teams will have plenty of time to practice and scrimmage on their own and will engage in seven on eight drills (without linemen), as well as team thud scrimmages (padded scrimmages meant to keep contact to a minimum) twice a day Monday-Wednesday and once Thursday morning.

?This camp will let us see who we really are,? Devereaux said.. ?... We have to find some personnel to fill some spots ? this camp helps you find those guys.?
